ONE DOES NOT SIMPLY
ACT LIKE AN INFLEXIBLE, CLOSE-MINDED SEXIST
SPOILER ALERT: Women aren’t lesser than men. This is the year 2012.

there are two ways of looking at this, though.
casting a woman for a strong lead character is a good thing.
casting a woman for a role because you are afraid of the homoerotic tension between two male characters is a bad thing.
i’m not into sherlock at all, but i know that feeling when you have a ~gay pairing~ in a series and one of them is replaced with the opposite sex because somebody thinks homosexuality is bad. i’m not saying that heterosexual tension doesn’t have the same credit, though.
on the other hand, i know that some people are only mad about this because they ARE inflexible sexists and think watson has to be a man because ~he’s always been a man!!~ and those people are fucking WRONG
tl;dr going “bam he’s now a woman now, no more gay! now they can be in love!” is just as bad as going “HE CAN ONLY BE A MAN, NO GIRLS ALLOWED”

I totally get that and agree with you. However, I have never gotten the vibe from Sherlock fans that they care about the ~social commentary~ or ~boundary pushing~ aspect of homosexual tension, but rather, “Ooh the gay Benedict Cumberbatch is so sexy look at how they gaze at each other fdsjak;fjak;.” And as far as source material goes, there’s nothing there in the original literature that suggests Sherlock needs to have a homoerotic relationship with John in any adaptation of the work (two guys can just be good friends, real shocking, I know).

this is true, fangirling over homoerotic tension and making it the only point of the series you like is really stupid. and it sort of makes the homosexuality into MORE of a taboo when it’s just something to freak out over, and not actual social commentary or anything.
the series IS about a detective solving mysteries, not about how gay the two main characters are for eachother.
i will call bullshit, however, if the female watson is romantically involved with sherlock because as you say, they aren’t canonically in a relationship in any of the novels. and if JUST BECAUSE she is female they’re in a relationship, not only does that make it seem like ~homosexuality is wrong~, it also makes it seem like women can’t work together with men without fucking them. like in bond movies where the woman always slows him down and gets in his way.
